What was the main concept of the lab?
The main concept of the lab was to teach us about velocity, kinetic, and potencial energy.
What did you learn?
I learned alot about the velocity in which the object travels depends alot on the mass of the object. Also that the kinetic energy is the energy of motion while the potencial energy is like a battery.
What did you already know before doing this lab?
Before this lab I already knew that height also affects velocity alot. For example if the end of the ramp is higher than the other it will travel at a greater velocity then if they were in the same height.
If you do this lab again how would you do it differently?
If I ever do this lab again I would make the ramp be higher and also that the car could weight a little more then it did.
Energy Homework 2
What is easy for you about understanding energy, what is hard?
What is easy for me about understanding energy is that I do undestand how to differ potencial from kinetic energy. What is still hard for me to understand are the energy maps.
What are relevant information and formula's for energy?
Relevant information about energy is that no energy is lost to friction it is only transferred. Some formulas for energy are PE=mgh KE=1/2 mv2.
Law of Conservation of Energy:
On this lab we had to do a pendulum and count the number of swings it did in 10 seconds. This lab demonstrates the Law of Conservation of Energy by the way the pendulum works. When the clip with the nuts is aligned with the table, the potencial energy is at its maximum. Then when the pendulum is aligned at the middle it has a greater kinetic energy and shows how energy is never lost or gained it only transfers to potential or kinetic energy. When the pendulum reaches the top it has energy to get another swing and it keeps on going. What was hard about this lab was that to find the average number of swings the pendulum did.
Maglev lab reflection:
For this exhibition, we are learning about magnetic levitation and how it is able to help us in our everyday life. We were asked to create a somewhat train like device that would be able to travel 5 feet using only magnetic levitation. We are supposed to be able to transport sand from one place to another. Our design was consisting of a strong cardboard, which would be used to create the structure of the cart. We also wanted to have a small amount of balloons located on the rear end, which would help us to be able to transportate the Maglev train. Then we had some magnets on the bottom that would help us to levitate our train.
Some of the problems that my partner and I ran into while doing this, where that the track would be too small for balloons to be placed without it getting stuck. So we had to change our design. We did the same like structure as the initial design, but what we changed was the way it was going to be able to move. We used a sail so that when we used a fan, it would move, or in other words magnetically levitate across the trail.
Even though our protoype looked good, it did not work as planned. It did this because we made it to heavy. If we where asked to re do this whole project again, I would make the Maglev prototype weight less and make it shorter. If it was to weigh less, the prototype would be able to carry more weight of another object, and would have been able to carry sand.
